Example 1

To a stirred solution of the SM (0.451 g, 1.58 mmol) in ACN at RT was added FeCl3 (9.9 mg, 0.061 mmol). After 5 min, HIO4 (0.403 g, 1.77 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred at RT 30 min, after which time it was quenched by the addition of aq Na2S2O3. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3x). The combined organics were washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to provide to product as a light brown oil, which crystallized to a solid upon standing.
